The first Newport, known as the Chrysler Newport Phaeton, was produced from 1940 to 1941,
and was a low-production roadster that used an straight-8 engine coupled to a 3-speed
manual transmission. The Newport was based upon the Chrysler New Yorker of the time,
and designed by Chrysler designer Ralph Roberts. Only 5 were built. Actress Lana
Turner owned a Newport Phaeton, as did Chrysler founder Walter P. Chrysler, who
used it as a personal car.
The Newport was restyled alongside the New Yorker and Chrysler 300 for 1963, with this
body style continuing for 1964.
Newports were based on Chrysler's C-body which also included the Dodge Polara and Plymouth
Fury. It also shared the New Yorker's tail fins and its rather curious diagonal quad
headlight design, a style one either seemed to love or despise. The 5.9L (361 cid) V8 was
the standard engine, with a 3-speed manual or pushbutton automatic transmissions available.
1964 models continued with little change other than a slightly revised front and rear end.
The 1964 Newport actually gained very small fins running along the back fenders to make
it look larger in the side profile.
This Classic example comes equipped with a 383 C.I. 90 Degree V-8 complemented by a
torque flight fully automatic Pushbutton controlled transmission. The engine is rated at 305 bhp
and runs exceptionally well. The exterior is a stunning Light blue with a black vinyl power
soft-top in working condition, complemented by wide white wall tires. The interior much like the exterior
is done in a classic two-tone Blue & Light blue Vinyl. Options include Pwr.Steering, Pwr. top, and
working AM Radio. This Newport is a good classic driver with normal signs of age, not a trailer
Queen or Show car. A timeless convertible classic Chrysler!
