Together with Ducati's original bevel drive 900SS, Laverda's Jota and the MV Agusta America,
the Moto Guzzi Le Mans rates as one of the truly great Italian motorcycles of the 1970s - and
unlike all the others, it was to survive not only for the whole of the 1980s, but creep
into the 1990s as well.
The Le Mans 1000 had its debut late 1984, it was more often refered to as the Mark IV.
This shared the larger 948cc engine already used in not only the V1000, but also the
California II and SPII and SPIII models, but in a higher state of tune. Differences
included larger valves, higher compression, bigger Dell'Orto carbs and new exhaust
pipes. With these new improvements the output increased to 86bhp( at the crankshaft),
and the top speed jumped to almost 140mph.
